Information about the Industry

Fitness training and notably ‘body building’ as we know it today can be dated back to the Egyptian and Greek times when training with heavy rocks was designed to show off a competitors strength and power within local communities.
Since its introduction, early BodyBuilding in the West exploded between 1880 and 1933, taking the countries concerned by storm. EugenSandow, quite possibly the most famous person in body building known worldwide, created the first UK competition dubbed the ‘Great Competition’ in the Royal Albert Hall, London. The event was heavily publicised long before the event on the 14th September 1901, but its publicity paid off as the show of wrestlers, fencers and the stars of the show, the Body Builders, were enjoyed by the packed audience. First prize, a bronze statue of Sandow himself was presented to William L. Murry of Nottingham. The Sandow statue, remains the most prized trophy within the BodyBuilding world presented to the winner of Mr Olympia each year.
By the 1920’s body building equipment was widely available on the market with barbells and dumbbells taking centre stage in a person’s desire for an advanced body. Between 1950 and 1960 body building became a high profile sport as Body Builders, cast in films, bought high publicity to the sport. Notable figures include Arnold Schwarzenegger and specific Body Building films, ‘Pumping Iron’ in 1977 and ‘Pumping Iron II: The Women’ in 1985 bought the life of a Body Builder to the masses and inspired many to take up the sport.
Many governing bodies set up following the successfulness of early BodyBuilding. In 1946, the IFBB (International Federation of Body Builders) set up with the goal of having BodyBuilding passed as an Olympic Sport. In England, a show runs under the title ‘EFBB (English Federation of Body Builders) NABBA (National Amateur Body Builders Association) was founded in 1950 and also continues to thrive and promote the sport.
Overall winner of the EFBB gains professional or pro card allowing them to compete in the IFBB (EFBB now know as UKBFF UK Body Building and Fitness Federation affiliated to the biggest BB federation of the IFBB, founded in)
Many Body Building Competitions have also grown a keen following, with the most famous being Mr Olympia, first started in 1965 and won by American, Larry Scott.
BodyBuilding has shifted from shear strength in the early days to three key areas; condition of competitor, equal size and even development of muscle and the symmetry of muscles as the sport has developed

The History of BodyBuilding Supplements

Since BodyBuilding became popular research into the nutrition side of reaching goals has been big business. Nutrition is arguably the most important of the 3 angles of BodyBuilding (training, nutrition and rest) and hence millions of pounds and hours are spent researching and developing new products.

Long gone are the days of eating tasteless egg whites as supplements with exceptional flavours have been developed. Introduced in about the 1940’s, the late 90s and early 00’s saw the greatest development and push in nutritional supplements as core products were developed and released to the market.

Whey Protein and Creatine form the core nutrition supplements developed followed by Meal Replacements, L-Glutamine and Complex Carbohydrates. Many other supplements are available but for many of them their effectiveness is yet to be proven.

The adoption of Body Building Supplements has been massive with them benefiting everyone male or female from the casual gym user to the competitive Body Builder.

Since ASN was formed in 2000 we have strived to developed the most beneficial products using the very best high quality ingredients.
